Tealight Candles

Tealight candles are a smaller, less expensive candle, but still have a wide range of decorative and practical uses. They were originally used to be lit under trays of food to keep them warm, or to keep tea warm. Now they are used for a number of different reasons. Some are scented and others are burned under scented oils to produce a more gentle scent. For their size, they can still produce a surprising amount of light and heat so it is a good idea to have a bag laying around for power outages and other unexpected situations.

Most often tealight candles are made from wax molded into a circular shape in a small, metal cup (usually aluminum). Because of their small size (about an inch in diameter) they are very inexpensive and almost always come in large packages. They can come in packages of five to bags of one hundred. It is possible to make these small candles, however because of their low price, most people opt to purchase them.

Holders for tealight candles also can serve a variety of decorative and practical purposes. The small metal containers are designed strictly to protect surfaces from the heat of the flame. Larger glass holders are common for decorative purposes; however there are many unique tealight candle holders available.

Depending on the quality of the wax and size of the wick, most tealight candles burn for approximately three to five hours. Despite their small size they can get very hot, especially as the wax lessens, and shouldn’t be handled when lit. It is a good idea to put a coin under them when they don’t have a big holder, to absorb the heat.
